At no point are you expected to actually believe the storyline - but that is fine; there are so many sweet moments, so much to laugh at, such fine acting, that you end up just liking the whole movie. As an adult I found a bit of a message it the way Leopold treated ladies Leopoldeventually strikes up a romance with Kate, at which point we learn that the building has a great rooftop space, and more troublingly, that Kate has set up a full-blown outdoor couch on her fire escape. In real life this use of a fire escape is both illegal and highly unsanitary (imagine that couch after a rainy day, or a visit from a Kate& Leopold is a whimsical romantic comedy starring the attractive Meg Ryan and the exceptional Hugh Jackman which is most striking in how un-striking it is.
